A Very Special Gentleman

Advocates come in all sizes, shapes and colors. You never know who the really passionate people are until something throws you for a loop.

A good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with lung cancer. No symptoms, simply a pain in his back, which he thought was the result of shoveling too much snow this winter. After several agonizing weeks at home, he was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed. Of course it was a shock for everyone.

He has a devoted wife and 3 children with lots of family commitments and activities planned. Due to metastatic spread, he is unable to walk. He underwent extensive surgery. He's now enduring physical and occupational therapy on a daily basis, along with radiation. This will be followed by chemotherapy.

He is always smiling, positive and his outlook is wonderful. While he was a patient in the hospital we all work at, he had numerous daily visitors, from the housekeeper to the CEO, that's just the type of guy he is - someone you are lucky to know.

When he was about to be transferred to the rehab facility, I went to visit him and help him pack up his belongings. He showed me a gorgeous basket that he had received from the staff - fruits, candies and the like. He told me that he had told his wife to leave the basket for me since we are always looking for baskets for the auction at our Fall Fashion Festival.

I almost lost it then. Here he is, just diagnosed with a devastating illness, with many months of therapy and adjunct treatment to undergo, and he was kind enough to remember the work we do for breast cancer patients.

That's the kind of man he is - a gentle soul with a heart of gold and the fortitude of Atlas. He is constantly worried about how the staff is doing, how his family is coping and trying to cheer up everyone else. He has the inner strength and determination to fight this battle with class, an ever-present smile and an unfailingly positive attitude. He is already a winner in my mind and sure to be a long-term survivor.

So, here's to you, boss, for your leadership, encouragement, ability to see good in everyone and your own special qualities. By next spring, this will all be a bad memory and we'll all go out and toast the town!
