Part I is "A Cancer Primer". There is a lot of solid material in this part of the book. A clear description of cancer, statistics, what does risk really mean, screening and preventive measures. This section alone should be mandatory reading for any adult who wants to know about cancer.
Part II is "Self-Care to Outsmart 9 Common Cancers". This section deals with breast, prostate, melanoma, lung, colorectal, ovarian, pancreatic, cervical and oral cancers. A non-nonsense approach to what and when you should be screened for and what to do about your personal risk for these cancers.
Part III is "Your Cancer Prevention Plan". This section deals with life choices that you can make which will make a difference in your health: quit smoking, maintain a healthy weight, eat fruits and vegetables, exercise, practice safe sex, avoid overexposure to sunlight and schedule regular checkups.
The book does not promise that you will not get cancer; it states the facts, gives you your options, and even explains the history behind some clinical trials, preventive therapies and screeings.
This is a great book, about many cancers, and should be in every home. A great book for all your friends and family. Publisher: Rodale ISBN 1-57954-730-3 or visit www.rodalestore.com
The other selection is Breast Cancer Husband: How to Help Your Wife (and Yourself), by Marc Silver. My first thought was, "Where was this book when I was diagnosed?" Seriously, this is a book that we have been waiting for for many years!
Mr. Silver starts out by saying: "In September 2001, I became a member of a club I really didn't want to join. My wife, Marsha Dale, was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I became a breast cancer husband."
The book is divided into easily digestible segments: Part I deals with diagnosis; Part II takes on treatment and beyond.
