I am very pleased to be associated with a new program, made possible by a grant from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation/Greater New York City Affiliate.
This program will offer a quarterly program for children of moms with breast cancer. This program will be held at Stony Brook University Hospital in Suffolk County on Long Island. You do not have to be a patient at SBUH or even live in Suffolk County to participate. Seating is limited, however, so that all the children can receive the attention they deserve. Register early. Below is information from the program brochure. This program is offered free to the participants, both mother and child. Please share this with any family that you think could benefit from participation. For a full brochure, or more information, check out our website: http://www.fallfashionfestival.com/kids Breast cancer affects the whole family. We know that you have a lot to deal with right now - your diagnosis, your treatment, your emotions. And yet, you're still "mom". Your family needs you and they are just as concerned as you are. Maybe they don't know how to show it. Maybe their fears are overwhelming. Maybe they resent the change in the every day routine. It's all normal. We want to help. We hope that you and your children (and spouse) will join us for this inaugural program. If you can't attend, we still want your children to attend. Perhaps a grandparent or other caregiver could attend with them. You don't have to complete your breast cancer journey alone. There is a lot of information available that we can provide for you - books, videos, pamphlets, websites, programs. We want to help you and your family to understand and cope with your disease. We'll be there for you. All you have to do is let us know you are interested and how we can help. GIFT for KIDS' program includes a group discussion led by trained social workers, a recreational therapy period, live entertainment, a "kid-friendly" luncheon, a wrap-up session together with the parent(s) and lots of take-home information and goodies! The "PARENT as PATIENT" portion runs in conjunction with the GIFT for KIDS session. It will include an introductory welcome, an overview of resources available, brief presentations by some of the support services offered, a relaxing luncehon, lots of resource material to take home and a question and answer session with our social workers, support staff and breast cancer survivor volunteers, and finally a short session together with your children.
