New Prognostic Factors For Axillary Node-Negative Breast Cancer Most adjuvant therapy for node-negative cancers is based on traditional indicators such as tumor size, grade, hormone receptor status, age. New factors, which may give a better indication whether adjuvant therapy is desirable or not, include proliferation rate, uPA/PAI-1 invasion factors, gene expression patterns, and cell cycle genes. It makes sense to me that the more we know about your individual cancer and the genes, patterns it exhibits, the better the doctors and you can decide what is best for you personally. This was presented in the foreign journal, Onkologie, dated 1/1/04, but I could not access it, as it is a subscription-only journal.

Complementary Therapy - Who's Communicating? Social workers are more apt to begin a discussion with patients about the possibilities of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) than are physicians or nurses. Since social workers deal more with the psycho-social aspects of disease, this makes sense, but wouldn't it be nice if all doctors and nurses were comfortable discussing areas of treatment outside of their realm of expertise? We don't expect them to be knowledgeable about everything, but being open to discussion, questions and able to lead you to resources who can supply the information you requested would be a bonus for all! This is from Complementary Therapies In Medicine, dated 1/2/04, but I could not access the article on their website.

Pre-Surgery MRI Is Good Indicator for BCT (Breast Conservation Therapy) Dr. Esserman of the Carol F. The study shows that circumscribed tumors shrink concentrically and will generally offer better potential for successful breast conservation. http://www.docguide.com/news/content.nsf...

Get A Second Opinion Researchers at University of Michigan have found that breast cancer patients who get a second opinion on their mammograms often receive a different plan of care, especialy when the second opinion is received from experienced specialists in a major cancer center. Most insurance companies pay routinely for a second opinion, so, when in doubt, get another opinion. If your insurance company gives you difficulty, argue your case.
