The AACR conferencehttp://www.aacr.org was the first conference that I have attended with fellow advocates who were not breast-cancer related. It was a great experience! Each cancer has its own problems and special concerns, but we all have a common goal - to eradicate cancer, educate the public about screening and preventive measures and ensure continued funds for research, education and patient services.
While I did not have the chance to interact with each and every advocate personally, they are a fabulous, high-energy group of individuals and I salute each and every one of them for their dedication to the cause. Checking out all the websites was an eye-opener for me personally. I've just written a quick blurb about each group and a bit about the advocate I met if we ended up sharing some time together. Hope you learn a thing or two about other cancers and can use these sites as resources for other cancer patients or cancer centers that you may work with. Keep your goals focused; aim high and reach for the stars! We can make a difference, one life at a time. Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support and Education (ALCASE) http://www.alcase.org November is Lung Cancer Awareness month. Lung cancer is still the leading death-causing cancer in the United States for both men and women. Bangkok Breast Cancer Support Group-Thailand http://www.bangkokbreastcancer.com The opening statement of their website says it best: As a doctor once said: "With breast cancer, you're treating not just the disease, but the entire woman." The Bangkok Breast Cancer Support Group is here to help you where your doctor leaves off. Connie Larkin, the founder, has recently relocated to Hong Kong, but continues to help the Bangkok group thrive and grow. She is a vibrant American woman who decided to take the situation in hand when a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. Because of the distance from most mainline support facilities, they can always use pamphlets, supplies, etc. Contact them if you can be of service. Cancer Patients Aid Association - India http://www.cpaaindia.org Spreading awareness on the dangers inherent in accepted social practices such as chewing of tobacco, early marriage, multiple pregnancies, etc, which are responsible for approximately 70% of cancers in India. Cancer BACUP - United Kingdom http://www.cancerbacup.org.uk CancerBACUP was launched as a national cancer information service in October 1985. Its founder, Dr Vicky Clement-Jones, through her own experience of cancer, realised that cancer patients, and their families and friends, had a great need for high quality and up to date information, practical advice and support
