The road to Eagle: merit badges. (part two)

Aug 22, 2001 - © Nicholas Bittner

very soon from loss of blood.

We're just going to skip over to requirement four until my resource is working again. Describe the signs of a broken bone. Show first aid procedures for handling fractures, including open (compound) fractures of the forearm, wrist, upper leg, and lower leg using improvised materials. I've broken over twenty bones, so I know most of the signs. Heavy swelling, the inability to move it, if you can't hold anything with the affected area, or if you can't stand on it, or if the pain stays for an hour or so. Depending on where the fracture is, you usually need to splint it. For fingers, toes, and legs, that's what you need to do. For a foot, wrist, or hand, you need to wrap it in an elastic bandage. Make sure that it can't move, but doesn't cut off circulation of blood. You need to splint the arm as well, and put it in a sling until it can be put in a cast. I honestly don't remember how to wrap a compound fracture, so I'll try to get to it another time.

Well, it's now time for me to go, so I'll be back later. Until next time, happy trails!
