Tenderfoot (part 1)© Nicholas Bittner
Hello everyone! I'm Nicholas Bittner, and this is my first article on the topic of Boy Scouts. I'll be
taking you through what you need to do to get to Eagle. The first step after actually joining, is to
earn your Tenderfoot.
The requirements will be in your Scout handbook, but in case you don't have yours I'll have the steps here. Here is the list of requirements. You don't have to do them in order. 1. Present yourself before your leader, properly dressed, before going on an overnight camping trip. Show the camping gear you will use. Show the right way to pack and carry it. 2. Spend at least one night on a patrol or troop campout. Sleep in a tent you have helped pitch. 3. On the campout, assist in preparing and cooking one of your patrols meals. Tell why it is important for each patrol member to share in meal preparation and cleanup, and explain the importance of eating together. 4a. Demonstrate how to whip and fuse the ends of a rope. 4b. Demonstrate that you know how to tie the following knots and tell what their uses are: two half hitches and the taut-line hitch. 5. Explain the rules of safe hiking, both on the highway and cross-country, during the day and at night. Explain what to do if you are lost. 6. Demonstrate how to display, raise, lower, and fold the American flag. 7. repeat from memory and explain in your own words the Scout Oath, Law, motto, and slogan. 8. Know your patrol name, give your patrol yell, and describe your patrol flag. 9. Explain why we use the buddy system in scouting. 10. Record your best in the following tests: Current results 30 days later Push-ups Push-ups Pull-ups Pull-ups Sit-ups Sit-ups Standing long jump Standing Long jump 1/4 mile walk/run 1/4 mile walk/run 11. Identify local poisonous plants; tell how to treat exposure to them. 12. Show first aid for the following: Simple cuts and scratches, blisters on the hand and foot, minor burns or scalds, bites or stings of insects and ticks, poisonous snakebite, nosebleed, frostbite and sunburn. 13. Participate in Scoutmaster conference. 14. Complete your board of review. Requirement 1 isn't that hard. A proper uniform consists of a shirt with the collar down, all the badges in the right place, a neckerchief, slide, shirt tucked in, shoulder ringlets on, and your clothes clean and in good order. Now for your pack, you want to carry loose things like candy, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc. in several ziplock bags. That way you won't have to dig around for countless small Go To Page: 1 2
