Very soon, it will be time for Halloween parties and Fall Festivals. Have you decided what kind of costume you will wear? Or what kinds of treats you hope to enjoy? One of my favorite memories is of a doggy Howl-o-ween party I went to one October. With a glittery pink cape and a gold banner proudly stating, Miss K-9 USA, I made my beautiful white spitz into a beauty queen. My little spotted terrier wore a lacy baby cap, a pink shirt, and a pacifier hanging from her collar. She even wore a diaper with a hole for her tail! Those dogs had so much fun searching for dog biscuits in the treasure chest and dunking for weiners in a tub of water. We humans enjoyed watching them and eating candy and cookies.
If your dog doesn't like to wear a costume, you can help him like it better. Gently lay it across his back for a moment and then give him his favorite treat. Do this several times a day. Then put the costume on him for just a minute or two and give him his favorite treat. After a few times, he should look forward to wearing his costume and getting his treat. Make sure his costume is not too tight and that he can breathe, move, see, hear, and bark while wearing it. Halloween is fun but it is also a time for pranks. Sometimes people pull pranks that can hurt pets. Here are some tips to keep your dog safe and happy on Halloween.
