Continued from A Surprise for Brady Brady started down the stairs, determined to get to the dog show, but each step came slower, until he reached the door. No, I can't leave Mrs. Hillman alone with those calves. I'd feel terrible if something happened to her. He sighed. I'll just have to forget the dog show and help her get those calves in from the storm. With one last look at the poster dog, he trudged out the door. When Brady arrived at the farm, he found the elderly woman struggling with a gate that was much too heavy for her. "Oh, Brady, I'm so glad you're here," Mrs. Hillman exclaimed. "I knew I could count on you!" Together, they managed to pull the gate open and Brady headed for the pasture. In the distance, he could see the cows already gathered near the fence. To his wonderment, the most gorgeous Collie he'd ever seen was holding the little herd together. Brady circled up behind the calves and began driving them the hundred yards back to the barn. The Collie darted this way and that, skillfully making sure none broke from the little group. Before long, they reached the gate. Here, several stubborn calves tried to double back, but the competent dog would not allow it. Brady was able to herd all twenty of them right into the barn. "That took no time at all with the Collie helping," Brady exclaimed. "Where'd he come from? I've never seen him here before!" "Oh, that's Toby. He always watches the calves in the pasture. He's been so much help here on the farm," Mrs. Hillman continued on wistfully. "George loved that dog-trained him from a puppy-all kinds of things." "He sure is smart...and pretty!" Brady said as he stroked the dog's silky coat. "Someday, I hope to own a smart, beautiful dog like him to show in obedience trials."
