Teach Your Dog to 'Find It'

© Joy Butler

Everyone loves to play games, whether it's hide and seek, Scrabble, or video games. Dogs are not so different. They like to play fetch or frisbee or tug but, for something a little different, you can teach your dog to 'find it'.

Get your dog excited by allowing him to play with his favorite toy for a few minutes or give him a taste of his favorite treat. Then put him on a sit/stay or have a friend hold him while you place the item on the floor several feet away. Release him and then tell him, "Find it! Find it!" Of course he will immediately go to it, so give him lots of praise. Repeat, each time placing the toy or treat a little farther away. Eventually you can place it in another room and even make it more challenging by hiding it in a box or under a towel. Be sure to encourage him and praise him and if he ever seems tired, respect that and allow him to rest.

You can also impress your friends by playing "Which One?" with your dog. Hold his favorite treat, such as a piece of milkbone or wiener, in your hand and extend both fists toward him. Ask him, "Which one?" He will know by scent and will indicate by touching the correct fist with his nose. This is when you reward him with the treat. If you want to teach him to indicate with his paw, keep holding the treat until he paws at it. Some dogs will only signal with their nose, so if your dog is one of these, be patient, and allow him to do what is natural for him. Remember not to hit him or scold him as that will only frighten him and he will be reluctant to play. Be sure to keep it fun for him. Keep in mind that too many treats can give him a tummy ache and make him fat.

Playing games will strengthen the bond you and your dog share, as well as impress your friends. And your dog will love you for it.
