Dog owners take their dogs to obedience classes. They take courses on dog training and read books on dog behavior. Everyone wants a well-behaved dog. Everyone is interested in teaching their dog to obey. But sometimes it works the other way around. My dogs know that I expect certain behavior from them, but they, too, expect certain behavior from me. And, I don't mind when my dogs boss me around a bit. Sharla, my white spitz (pictured above), is getting up in years and when she needs a lift on or off the bed, she stands at the edge and "calls" me with a little bark. I'd rather she did that than fall and hurt herself. Susie, my little fox terrier mix, loves to go outside and sun herself on the deck, but when she stands at the door and gives a sharp "yip YIP" that's my cue to let her back in. I don't have to worry about forgetting her outside. I can depend on her to remind me! She's a good trainer! If Sharla wants a milkbone, she will stare at me, then look at the box and give a little "Whoof". And that's ok with me. Even though some dog training manuals teach that dogs should not beg for food, in my house, dogs have a right to ask for things they want. I don't mind if they're a bit spoiled...well, ok, maybe a lot! Almost every time Sharla asks me, I give her a milkbone. She has me well trained! So, do we really want little robots? Wouldn't we rather have furry little pets with personality? I believe it's ok to listen to our dogs, and let them train us a bit, too. It helps them know they're loved! Does your dog have you well trained?
Remember: No matter how cute he begs, NO sweets or chocolate for your dog! It can make him very sick. If you give your dog a Valentine, be sure it's something safe and made especially for doggies!
