The Road Less Traveled by M. Scott Peck, M.D. Long time readers of my column might be surprised by my choice for this article. Typically, my book choices lean toward lighter fare, with a heavy emphasis on mysteries, suspense novels and contemporary fiction. On the rare occasion that I do choose to review a nonfiction title, it is usually one laced with the storytelling elements I enjoy so much in fiction. I have, however, just experienced a trying period in my own life, one filled with personal disappointments, illness and a family medical scare. While this might normally lead one to gravitate toward darker readings, I have emerged from this period of trial a more spiritually aware individual. So, The Road Less Traveled, aptly subtitled ‘A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values and Spiritual Growth,’ seemed the perfect complement to my newfound state of mind. Divided into four broad sections (Discipline, Love, Growth and Religion, and Grace) Dr. Peck (a noted psychiatrist) takes us into his extensive private practice, lacing his teachings with actual case studies that exemplify the human psyche’s extraordinary ability to overcome. It delves into such issues as delaying gratification, defining the true meaning of love, taking risks, examining religious worldviews and welcoming the gift of grace into our lives. Of course, I found much to related to within The Road Less Traveled’s pages and it is likely that you will too. Whether you are seeking insight into your own problems or assistance on your journey toward a higher life path, you will find comfort and wisdom in Dr. Peck’s words. You’ll also discover encouragement as life’s little guidebook instructs you on the basic tenets of happiness. Allow The Road Less Traveled to soothe your soul and lead you to a greater self-understanding and life fulfillment. ******************************* If you are a fan of my column you might want to check out the new Suite U course The Joy of Reading.
