Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

It started as a matter of practical purposes. Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, brother and sister, both unmarried and certainly not getting any younger, decided that the time had come to adopt. A hardy boy of 11 or 12 would be the perfect addition, allowing Matthew to cut back his workload at the busy Green Gables farm.

But, as is often the case, even the best laid plans sometimes go awry. Upon arrival at the train station, Matthew discovers the orphanage has made a terrible mistake…they’ve sent a girl instead of a boy. Yet gentle Matthew just can’t find it in his heart to squash the bubbling excitement and enthusiasm of his young charge. So, he takes her back to Green Gables with him, leaving the disappointing task in Marilla’s hands. And, within the few hours drive back home, the spunky, talkative, red-haired Anne quickly worms her way into Matthew’s heart.

Despite Marilla’s steely exterior, she senses Matthew’s affection for Anne and struggles with the options. Righting Anne’s outspoken ways and bringing her up properly most certainly will fall upon Marilla, yet she just can’t bring herself to break her fragile brother’s heart. So, with reluctance, it is decided that Green Gables will become Anne’s new home, and neither of the Cuthberts could ever guess how much their lives will change.

Armed with a fiery spirit that gets her in more trouble than she’d like, underneath Anne is an upright young lady who charms her way into all of Avonlea’s heart. Her scrapes and predicaments are renowned, from her sharp tongue, to her mistakenly rendering her best friend drunk, to dying her dreaded red locks green. Yet through it all, Anne emerges (from freckle-faced tomboy to auburn haired beauty) to become the pride of the island and just the cure for two lonely Cuthberts ills.

Written in 1908, Anne of Green Gables is the first in a series chronicling Anne’s life. Set in the majestic landscape of Canada’s Prince Edward Island, the series has gone on to become a popular favorite among many young (and not so young) girls. The Green Gables House has also become one of Prince Edward Island’s most visited attractions.
