The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank© Kathy Kehrli
The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing by Melissa Bank
Starting in her adolescence, when Jane busies herself exploring the nuances of a relationship between her brother and his much older girlfriend, we get the idea that love (in all of its manifestations) fascinates and consumes Jane. For that assumption, the reader is not let down. The Girls’ Guide… carries Jane through her teen years, to her often returned-to affair with a decidedly older man, to the sickness of her father and his impending death. The book also provides a fascinating portrayal of Jane as a struggling literary agent, just looking to make her way in the world in the best way she knows how. Though at times dramatically deep, The Girls’ Guide… offers some humorous moments, most decidedly in the final chapters. Here, Jane’s doomed failure with men leads her to a desperate last resort, following the rules set forth in How to Meet and Marry Mr. Right. Even as Jane has combative conversations in her head with the book’s authors, ultimately she has to live her life her own way. Many have compared The Girls’ Guide… to Bridgett Jones’ Diary. Having not read the latter, I can’t compare and contrast the two. If you like the single woman, looking for love in all the wrong places, edgily funny type of book, however, The Girls’ Guide to Hunting and Fishing is probably just the read for you.
