Smart Women by Judy Blume
Margo, B.B. and Clare are the three aforementioned women, each juggling ex-husbands, current lovers, pre-teen and teenage children, demanding careers and, for some, some long silenced secrets. When B.B. asks Margo to secure the next-door apartment for her long-absent husband, Andrew, things really become sticky. Unresolved tragedies resurface, sending B.B off the deep end. Then, when Andrew falls for Margo, B.B. tumbles over the edge. Add to the mix the sexual tension building between Margo’s son and Clare’s daughter and well, you get the picture (if you’re still following me)…major complications. What’s unique about this book is the fact that it is written from so many different viewpoints, shifting back and forth between adult and adolescent voices. This is Judy Blume’s strong talent taking the helm. A best-selling young adult author, she’s got writing from the child’s point of view down to a perfect science and Smart Women doesn’t disappoint. Teenage rebellion, trepidation over divorce and cautiousness toward step-parenthood all ring uncomfortably and decidedly true. And, in true Judy Blume fashion, the book finishes on a highly realistic beat. If you prefer your books without cookie cutter, neatly wrapped up endings, then you’re sure to enjoy Smart Women.
