Summer is almost upon us and that means picnics, barbeques, vacations and pool parties. It also means a lot more free time to lounge around with a good book. I don’t know about you, but I tend to favor light reads such as Mary Higgins Clark mysteries and Jackie Collins’ trashy romances when the temperatures soar. Whatever your preference, there’s sure to be plenty to choose from on the bargain shelves of your favorite bookstore. Here are a few to get you started. 1. The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea by Sebastian Junger ( Trade PB $5.98) Last summer, it was a blockbuster hit starring George Clooney. Based on a true account, The Perfect Storm tells the harrowing story of six crewmembers who set sail from Gloucester, Massachusetts in the fall of 1991. On board the Andrea Gail, a commercial fishing vessel, they unknowingly headed straight into 120 mph winds in what would be dubbed, the "Storm of the Century." 2. Blonde by Joyce Carol Oates (HB $7.98)
This fictionalized biography of Norma Jean Baker, better known as Marilyn Monroe, was recently made into a television mini-series. This book stirred both controversy and critical acclaim, having been nominated for the National Book Award. Part fiction, part fact, Blonde is sure to raise some eyebrows and pulse rates with its cast of celebrities and its backdrop of scandal. 1. The Simple Truth by David Baldacci ($6.99) A legal pageturner, perfect for a lazy after noon at the beach. Rufus Harms, convicted of a murder he’s convinced he commited, is suddenly faced with the shocking truth. He didn’t do it. From his prison cell, he secretly files an appeal, hoping to outwit the real killers. 2. From the Heart by Nora Roberts ($6.75) Prefer a juicy romance? Then you’re certainly in for a treat. This collection includes three complete stories from best-selling author, Nora Roberts: Tonight and Always,A Matter of Choice and Endings and Beginnings. 3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: The Soundtrack (Audio) by Douglas Adams ($4.99) Author Douglas Adams recently passed away, but here’s your chance to here him read his most famous work.
