Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

The day Mitch Albom graduated from Brandeis College, he hugged his favorite professor goodbye, presented him with a farewell gift and vowed to keep in touch. It was a weak promise, one that he never truly intended to keep. So, the months faded into years and Mitch traveled the traditional American path to success, setting aside his dreams of becoming a musician in favor of better paying jobs and an endless quest for more. Now a newspaper journalist, consumed by a high-pressured job, Morrie Schwartz rarely crossed Mitch’s mind. All of that changed one fateful evening. Haphazardly flipping through TV channels, Mitch stumbled upon a Nightline interview featuring his much-loved professor and stopped cold in his tracks. For instead of the smiling mentor of old, he saw instead a frail and aging man. Morrie was dying of ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease, and was sharing his final story with the world. Memories came rushing back and soon Mitch was on a plane back into his past, a trip that would set him back on course to the true meaning of life. Time may have visibly aged them, but inside Mitch and Morrie were still the same people. Their friendship flourished right where it had left off and a courageous dying man found an eternal voice in his former student. This would be their final thesis and Mitch would share the story. So, every Tuesday, without fail, Mitch made the trip from Detroit to Massachusetts to meet with Morrie, discussing the old man’s last thoughts about regret, death, family and love, penning them down for posterity. And in his final words of advice, Mitch would re-evaluate his own life, the profound reminder of earth’s greatest treasures ringing in his ears. Tuesdays with Morrie is that story. Through Mitch’s and Morrie’s eyes, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll be reawakened to the overwhelming power of love.
