Pretzel Logic by Lisa Rogak

When Lisa Rogak approached me about reviewing her novel, Pretzel Logic, for my “Books You May Have Missed” column, I gladly accepted. Hey, I’ll be the first to admit I’m not one to turn down an offer for a free book. What I didn’t realize when I agreed to read this book, was just how much Pretzel Logic would exceed my expectations.

Emily Spencer, a newspaper writer in her early thirties, is independent and contentedly single. That is until Michael Rogers strolls into her life. Caught up in his handsome good looks and charming personality, Emily falls in love for the first time in her life. Their whirlwind romance soon leads to marriage and a business partnership. By all appearances, Emily and Michael are living the fairy tale dream. But underneath the surface, Michael is hiding a disturbing secret, one Emily could never guess.... he’s gay.

One day he abruptly lets his secret out of the bag and turns Emily’s world turns upside down. What follows is an emotionally powerful account of a roller coaster ride filled with guilt and blame, humor and sadness, denial and eventually acceptance. You’ll laugh out loud and squirm with uneasiness, as Lisa draws the reader into these characters’ lives.

Lisa Rogak’s writing is poignantly honest. She writes with such believable dialogue and heartfelt emotion that I can only compare her to the wonderful author, Anne Tyler. And it’s no wonder that Ms. Rogak so intimately portrays this drama. Though Pretzel Logic is a work of fiction, Lisa’s own husband revealed that he was gay during the course of their marriage.

I have to admit that if I had picked up this book at a bookstore, I never would have bought it. The subject matter is something I never would have believed I could relate to. Ms. Rogak has proven me wrong. Once I opened the cover, I was drawn right in. I am confident that you will be too. At just under 250 pages, you can easily finish this novel in a few nights. With a not often seen premise and such fluid writing, Pretzel Logic promises to be time well spent.
