What's Wrong with Dorfman?© Kathy Kehrli
At the request of author John Blumenthal, I am rerunning Kathy's great review of What's Wrong this Dorfman? The newest version of this book will be out this month, now published by St. Martin's Press. The review first ran in November, 2000. Enjoy it!
~Irene What's Wrong with Dorfman? by John Blumenthal Martin Dorfman's got problems...BIG problems. He's a struggling screenwriter who hasn't caught a break in years. He's got a crazed family and a childhood filled with enough parental paranoia to drive anyone insane. Now he's developed a mysterious illness that no doctor can explain. So, perhaps a more apt title for John Blumenthal's hysterical satire of the human condition is 'What Isn't Wrong with Dorfman?' "It's all in your head", they tell him and perhaps it is. But Martin Dorfman is sick, no doubt about it, and no one can relate. Then he meets Delilah Foster in the doctor's waiting room. Misery loves company and the two begin comparing notes and symptoms. While she can offer him commiseration, she doesn't bode much hope for a cure. She's "been there and done that" and things aren't looking good for Martin. So, he takes matters into his own hands, reading the Family Medical Guide from cover to cover and consulting the wackiest of alternative medical practitioners. Then of course, there's good ole Dr. Dad, a retired GP, who is convinced Martin has colitis, cancer or power line poisoning. This coming from a man whose obsession with illness causes Martin to have ulcers before he reaches high school. Who's a sick guy to trust? John Blumenthal has taken an outrageous subject, injected it with a reality everyone can relate to, and sprinkled it with just the right blend of hilarity. Quite a combination that you'll rarely find wrapped up in one novel. What's Wrong with Dorfman's zany cast of characters lend themselves perfectly to the big screen. If this book should make it to film, the next big catch phrase just might be..."you're wasting your time if you don't create a nice lather." Trust me on this one, you'll be laughing yourself so silly that you just might be joining Martin Dorfman at his next doctor visit.
