How Books are Put Together - Part 2Example The first page and the last page are printed side-by-side on a single sheet. The second page and the next-to-the-last page are printed on the back of the sheet. Here are some things to do when you arrange the pages of a center-bound book: Determine the number of pages needed. Make a dummy book to help you see how the pages go together. Use the pagination diagram system to determine how the pages go together. Add together all text and illustration pages and all front and back matter pages. This gives you the number of pages you will need for the book you are making. Tip: Do not consider the book cover unless it will be printed on the same paper as the book pages. If the number is not divisible by four, add enough blank pages to make the number divisible by four. Tip: Add the blank pages at the front of the book, at the back of the book, or before the first chapter in the book. Check back next time for how to finish putting the book together in Part 3: Printing and Collating
