5. Next, decide how you are going to bind the book. A couple examples of common bindings are:

Side-binding. A side-bound book is a series of pages bound together on one side. The positive feature of a side-bound book is that it is easy to design, paginate, and collate . Some negative features are that the book does not lay open very well, it may lose front and back pages if it is not protected by a sturdy book cover, and a thick book may require long staples if you choose to bind it by stapling.

Center-binding, A center-bound book is a series of pages that are folded in half and bound together in the middle. (Also known as "Saddle-bound.") The positive feature of a center bound book is that it lays flat when open. The negative features of a center-bound book are: It may lose center pages if it is not securely bound, the thicker the book, the more trimming it will require, arranging pages and collating is complicated, and it may require a long stapler if you choose to bind it by stapling.

There are, however, a lot of ways to bind a book. The choice of binding will usually vary according to:

Available funds

Available materials

Purpose of the book

Thickness of the book, and

The type of book.

Book Binding Materials. There are several materials you can use for binding books together. Which option you choose depends on:

The climate

The thickness of the book

The intended use of the book, and

Whether it will be side-bound or center-bound .

Here are some materials you will need for the typical bindings:

Staples for stapling a book together

Heavy thread or twine for sewing a book together

Tape for taping a book together

Stapling a book together. You can bind a book by stapling the pages together. Binding books by stapling them is relatively easy and economical. You can staple them at the side or in the center. When stapling a book together:

Leave plenty of room on the inside edge of the pages (the gutter margin ) for the staples when you side-staple a book. Leave more stapling room for thicker books.

Use a heavy-duty stapler for thick
