Not many people think about it while they're reading a book, but putting a book together involves a lot of decisions and tasks besides writing the actual content of the book. In order to publish a book, all of the elements of a book have to be carefully planned in advance. Listed below are the basic steps to follow putting together a book. (Keep in mind: A lot of book artists make their books by hand or work with small printers to run small quantities. However, if an author/book artist plans to use a local print shop for printing the book, they may have to adhere to written standards or guidelines provided by the printer.)
1. Assemble the text and illustrations. After the content is written, and the pictures are finished, it still takes a long time to decide how they will fit together. Special care should be taken to make sure all parts of the book flow together. 2. Decide on and create the front and back matter. All books need to have some information about the book itself included on pages either at the front or back of the book. These pages are often referred to as front or back matter. Here are some examples of front or back matter: Appendix An appendix is supplementary back matter or other written material added to a publication. Some examples of what's included in an appendix include: *Explanations and helpful information the author has decided not to make part of the text *Definitions of words or concepts used in the publication *Maps, charts, tables, lists, diagrams, or other explanatory sections ) Bibliography A bibliography is a list of resources used or referred to by an author. Bibliographies used to be lists of written resources. Today, however, they often include information on other resources such as the following: *Interviews *Video and audio tapes *Computer resources *Speeches Copyright information A copyright is the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, and sell a literacy work, musical work, or artistic work. Copyrights are granted by law to authors and others for a specific period of time. Book cover A book cover is a protective binding or overlay on a book, usually made of heavier material than the book pages. A cover is useful because it makes a book more attractive more durable more prestigious, and easy to identify. Kinds of Covers:
