I guess my overall point is, don't sweat the design too much, avoid over-engineering it and you can't go wrong. I realize you wish to build a surrounding structure eventually so you have to make it a bit more sturdy. If you're still concerned with drainage, just make sure the soil beneath has been tilled out well, or if at all possible site the bed on a slight slope. Peter's nursery had grow beds that were little more than big sheets of plastic laid out and the soil I mentioned above heaped onto it. Simple but effective!
