Session VIII to X:
The last three stages of Rolfing are termed as 'ntegrative'. The Rolfer initiates no new work. He tries to being together the work of the last 7 sessions - that is, he works on entire lengths fascial sheaths as if sewing together separately prepared sections of a new garment. The focus is to let all the limbs and the central pillar the spine and trunk function seamlessly as a whole with close to no coercive effort.
Since gravity is a constant force to reckon with much of the Rolfer's work in these sessions is to gauge how well the patient's newly aligned body operates given the eventual effect of gravity. The patient will be asked to walk around quite often during these sessions to allow the Rolfer to assess this aspect. Also much of the work is done sitting or standing for the same reasons discussed earlier.
A good Rolfer will reinforce the importance of the exercises taught during the Rolfing sessions and also reiterate the importance of performing daily physical activities such as sitting, standing up, bending, turning, lifting weight and such other demands in accordance with the guidelines the Rolfer would have tutored the patient on during the course of the earlier sessions.
A knowledgeable Rolfer will advise that you avoid any deep structural work for at least a year after this intial Rolfing Therapy as the deep changes triggered by Rolfing will continue for months, even years hence. However, consulting a Rolf movement teacher or teachers of the Alexander Technique is a good way to retrain yourself in ways of using your "new" bodies to maximum benefit.
