Q & A

A: Sorry buddy, but I'm afraid they've ripped you off bigtime. In order to get a washboard, you have to lose bodyfat. This can only be obtained by overall fatloss. Spotburning does NOT work, no matter how much we all want it to. And "5 min a day" exercise of one small muscle group certainly will not do any difference. Think about it - one pound of fat is approx 3500 calories. Assume that you burn 100 calories an hour when you're awake, with a max burn of 6-700 calories/hour when you're exercising vigorously. 5 min = 1/12 of an hour. And if you'd magically achieve 100% fatburn during those single 5 min a day - which is impossible - we're talking about, say 50 calories. 3500 calories. 50 calories. You do the math.

Q: Why don't you advocate the bench press? It's the king of chest exercises!

A: Let me turn it around: What can you achieve with a bench press that a dumbbell-press won't do? With dumbbells, you get a better stretch at the bottom, you learn better control thus preventing future shoulder injuries, and you're not depending on a spotter to keep your head from coming off when you reach total failure.

Q: I'm a vegetarian. Can I still become a successful bodybuilder?

A: Absolutely! My wife is vegetarian, and, even though she's more into fitness than bodybuilding, the diets are very similar. The main problem have always been getting the protein intake up while keeping carbs down. It has to be quality protein, and with meat and fish out of the equation it gets harder to find. But there is, don't despair. First of all, do you eat dairy products? If so - problem solved, say hello to your friends Milk and Eggs! Otherwise, there's beans, peas, sunflower seeds, and soy protein. Corn and fresh bread eaten together surprisingly turns out to yield protein of excellent biological value. Soy protein usually sucks, both protein-quality and tastewise, so if you can tolerate a little milk in your protein drinks you're doing yourself a double favor. Twinlab has a soy protein called Vege Fuel that is enriched to get a better amino acid balance, and considering the improvement in taste as well it might be worth the money (usually twice as expensive as ordinary brands).
