Tips for getting a good fit and clothes that look good on your body. To get a good fit for your body - Choose styles with seams or other details in areas needing adjustments. The more seams, darts, pleats, or gathers in a figure area, the more opportunities to correct the fit without extensive changes to the pattern pieces.
To minimize large areas - Choose very simple styles with virtually no details in the area you want to minimize (ex. large bust - no pockets or ruffles on front)
To reveal your figure shape - Choose styles with traditional close fit. (Ex. darts and contour shaping)
To conceal your figure shape - Choose styles with relaxed fit which emphasizes the flow of fabric rather than figure underneath.
Plus Size - Full figured
Know the image you want to project and what clothes reflect your personality.
Keep patterns small, as a rule, so they won't overwhelm you.
Don't over accessorize. Consider wearing simple earrings and a pearl necklace, for example.
Do NOT wear a muumuu or tent style.
Choose:
Ivory is less stark than white
A ball gown with a Basque waist or a high-waist or an A-line with a low neckline.
Clothing that skims the body and follows the silhouette without being too tight
Avoid:
A slim sheath or slinky bias cut that will cling
Spaghetti straps.
Clingy fabrics such as crepe or jersey
Bulkier fabrics like velvet and heavy satin.
"Chopped in half" look with the top different from the bottom.
Body Shape Variations:
Triangle or Pear Shaped To achieve a balanced look, maximize the top and minimize the bottom part of your figure. Do this using color, shape and styling details.
If you have a small bust and bigger hips buy a dress to fit the largest part of your body. Never order a dress in the size you want to be. Use a full length mirror so you can see the full effect of your outfit. Choose:
Fashion details such as pinstripes, side snaps or embroidery patterns.
Pressed pleats, vertical tucks, button front closings, v-necklines and princess seams. (vertical line details)
Skirts with slits up the sides
Small padded shoulders
Wear long tops that go past the hips
Choose jackets, tailored suits and shirtwaist dresses with straight, classic cuts.
Shoulder details such as gathering, tucking and embroidery.
Lighter colors on top can be worn, this brings eyes up.
Wear dark stockings and avoid patterns.
Select vertical, fluid patterns and avoid bulky fabrics.
Adopt the just below the knee look in dresses and skirts.
