We have been keeping our readers apprised of the GPS date rollover
which occurred August 21, 1999. My Garmin 45 hand-held model has served me well for five
years now but to make sure it would rollover with no problems I called Garmin over 2
months ago. I was told that there would not be a problem with my model with either the
rollover or Y2K.
Well... as it turns out this was only partially true. Garmin 45 models with the software version 3.0 and above were okay, but since mine has software version 2.24 (actually, as it turns out, is was the 41st unit manufactured) it was NOT okay. In fact, I could not locate any satellites. To make things worse, I was getting prepared for private sailing lessons offshore from Miami with hurricane Dennis approaching. I started calling Garmin on both their toll-free and regular numbers. Both numbers were busy for days and continue to be busy as I write this. I was forced to borrow a friend's GPS for the sailing lessons but once I returned I continued to try to contact Garmin. Again, busy signals for days. Finally I went to their website http://garmin.com and found the information I needed. At first they suggested that I press the "page" button at the same time I pushed the "power" button and that should reset the unit. That did not work. I was able to download a software patch from the Garmin web site and with the help of a patch serial cable was able to upload the update into my handheld. The software uploads a new date/time to the GPS unit. After receiving the new date/time, you turn the unit off and then back on and the GPS unit searches the sky to find satellites and collect new almanac data. This took about an hour to accomplish but now everything seems to be working properly. WARNING: This software patch from Garmin is only for designated Garmin units. Check out their website http://www.garmin.com/faqs/1.html to find the patch that will work for you. If you are having trouble with your GPS after the update, don't hesitate to contact the manufacturer and have them assist you in resolving the problem. On to Y2K! |
