Halloween is a fun time of year for me and my family. We love to decorate with fall items, such as pumpkins, corn stalks, colored corn and straw bales. I especially like the colors of fall: The golds, reds, yellows and browns mixed with a bit of green left-over from the long, hot summer.
I enjoy the nip in the air and the wind blowing the leaves around. (Less for me to rake up) I even like riding the four-wheeler over the recently harvested cornfield, bouncing and bumping along watching the deer sneak out of the edge of the woods and grab the corncobs that weren't completed cleaned off by the farmer's big machines. Yes, Fall is my favorite month because I enjoy getting outdoors and doing a bit of dove hunting, trout fishing and hiking, shooting animals with my camera instead of a gun. I always eat what I kill, and I only kill what I would eat. When Halloween comes around I've decorated my yard with mounds of leaves with headstones with clever little sayings on them. I usually dress up like some kind of maniacal chain-saw carrying lunatic, which the kids just love (0r else run the other way). Living in the country, though, the parents drive the children to our house, so it is always children that we know, and they know what's up and come back year after year for the 'show' and candy. Since we don't get nearly as many children as those in town or a big city, we hand out pre-made bags of candy and a candy apple with caramel and nuts, homemade by Mom and Step-Dad to the neighbors. We light a bonfire that night and set up an orange light at the end of the driveway to help them see their way to our place. Everyone has fun, spends a little time, and goes on their way to the next house. Fall is my favorite time of year, and Halloween my very favorite holiday. Yes, it's been commercialized by the stores and television; but you can still do a lot of it on your own with items you find around the house or what you pick up from a neighboring farmer to help make your home have the Halloween atmosphere. It's not necessary to buy a $50.00 costume or mask. There are so many things you can make yourself into using clothing no longer worn in the household, or even going to the local Salvation Army and picking up some crazy clothing items for next to nothing.
