Getting Along

You can imagine the risks involved when strangers come together, hoping against hope that they'll get along as a family.Well, that's what happens when blended families come together.

A combination of fear of the unknown and a fear of change often leads to problems when families blend. While some get along just fine, there are issues all blended families have in common.

Where both of a child's parents remarry, they have two sets of parents and possibly new siblings, grandparents and a new home and neighborhood to adjust to. Adults who remarry often inherit new children, new in-laws and, sometimes, new problems.

Disagreements between ex-spouses have the potential to upset both households.

Battles over authority are also common. Children may rebel at being told to answer to an adult or older sibling who isn't a blood relation.

Here are a few steps that can be taken to help families merge.

1) Don't rush children into developing relationships. It takes time for children to adjust, but if you push them too fast to accept the other person or persons, you may find yourself in a worst situation than if you let things happen more naturally.

2) Don't be caught off guard. Try to anticipate potential problems based on family members' personalities.

3) Make sure chain of command is clear in the beginning. 4) Don't overdo it by trying to get everyone from all the families together.

5) MOST IMPORTANT! Pick your battles wisely.

If you take these simple steps, along with love and patience, your families will have an easier time blending and becoming a single successful, happy family.
