Holiday Films That Never Get Old Part 1

Was there ever a better screen Santa Claus than Edmund Gwenn? He is the key to this movie. While many people in the film think he is crazy, the audience is never fooled. When Gwenn shows up at the beginning of the film, complaining about the misplacement of reindeer on the Macy’s Parade Santa float, it is clear to us that there *is* a Santa Claus, and Gwenn is he. If IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE reaffirms our faith in ourselves, MIRACLE ON 34th STREET reaffirms our childhood - that time when we could believe in Santa Claus without ridicule or doubt. Natalie Wood, in one of her earliest films, is excellent as the little girl who doesn’t believe.
