Mr. Deeds - Tomb Raider!

Why-Nona?
I won't fall into the trap of reviewing a movie while it is still in production. For all I know, the Adam Sandler remake of DEEDS could be the best picture of 2001, though I am not going to bet my life savings on it. Adam Sandler can surely play a country bumpkin. Not a three-dimensional one, not one that you will have sympathy for or care about at all - but he could play one just the same. Ryder will surely do all right as a big city reporter, but somehow I cannot see her falling in love with Adam Sandler. But maybe that's just sour grapes on my part. (Hey, Noni - forget the Adam Sandlers and Richard Geres! I'm single, I'm in relatively good health, and I own MERMAIDS and EDWARD SCIZZORHANDS on VHS!)

DEEDS 2001 will probably be filled with the usual heavy-handed left-wing political messages Hollywood can't help but stuff their films with, especially with the "rich versus poor" storyline that DEEDS offers. I am almost certain there will be big city polluters, anti-environmentalist tree-killers, or evil tobacco executives, making Mr. Deeds life a living hell. A Rupert Murdoch type will probably own the newspaper Winona works for. Hollywood, a town still in shock that Al Gore is not in the White House, simply cannot help itself sometimes.

Political propaganda aside, I can see no reason, not even to allow Winona Ryder to keep food on her table, to remake any film by Frank Capra. Were the originals just not good enough? What's next - IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE starring Jim Carrey? (I can just see Carrey running down the streets of Bedford Falls while making his butt say "Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas!") But I refuse to say that DEEDS 2001 is a lousy movie and should never have been made until I see it. At that point, I am 99 percent sure I will say it.
