Moe Howard, his brother Shemp and friend Larry Fine were "The Stooges" in the stage act Ted Healy and His Stooges. Eventually they broke from Healy and renamed themselves The Three Stooges. After some work in feature films in the thirties, they starred in a long running series of shorts for Columbia Studios. By this time, Jerry Howard ("Curly") had replaced his brother Shemp, and his wild but childlike character helped make the Stooges a popular attraction in movie theaters, though due to illness he was eventually replaced by Shemp. After Shemp’s death, other Stooges followed, but the Stooges continued to work into the sixties in feature films like HAVE ROCKET, WILL TRAVEL and AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAZE.
