Ringneck Parrots in Egypt
Egypt does not have any indiginous populations of parrot. We have ring-necked parrots which escaped from captivity and are now breeding in the wild. Little is known about our populations of ringed-necked parrots. No one I know is actively studying them. As for the history and distribution of ring-necked parakeet in Egypt, according to the Birds of Egypt ( Goodman and Meininger 1989, Oxford University Press), ring-necked parakeets were introduced to the Nile Delta and quickly established themselves in Giza and other locations near Cairo. They are found in the parks in the environs of Cairo, particularly around the grounds of the Giza Zoological Garden. It also is seen in other Delta cites, especially Alexandria and Suez. The total local population of this species in Egypt is estimated at several hundred, although it could be much higher. It nests in holes in buildings, under roof eaves and in tree hollows. In Egypt it seems to have a preference for roosting in palm trees.
