Various Bathing Methods

As we all know, grooming is a very important part of your bird's daily life. But bathing is a very important part of grooming. Routine bathing is essential to a healthy, happy bird. Even in the wild bathing is important, where most exotic birds come from areas with around 300 inches of rain, anually! We should not let our standards drop to "mist them every once in a while." It should be at least once a week, preferably daily.

Bathing can be the difference between a happy bird and a grouchy one, an itchy bird or a content one, a healthy bird or a sick one . . .

One of the biggest questions you find about bathing is, which way? There are many ways that you can bathe your bird, each method should be tried and tested, to see what your bird likes.
Here are some basic bathing methods:

  • Showers
Larger birds usually love to take showers with you, especially the ones that are big dust producers. Usually, you can find special perches made for the shower that your bird can use. Make sure the perch has a grip and will not fall off. Some birds really like to stand on their master's shoulder in the shower, it just depends on the bird.
But make sure you do not let the bird come in contact with any shampoo or soap, since this can be toxic.
  • Misting
Usually smaller birds like this the most. Get a NEW spray bottle that has never been used before and fill it with hot water. Hot water, because when the water comes in contact with the air, it quickly cools. I say NEW spray bottle because used spray bottles could have possibly harmful bacteria and toxic substances contained within, waiting for your bird.
Set the spray flow to fine mist.
You should never use the spray bottle as a punishment, this quickly confuses the bird and things will go downhill from there.
  • Bathing
Smaller birds really like this one, especially finches. Set a dish down in their cage with lukewarm to partly warm water. Soon they'll be sending water all over the place.
  • Just remember to give them a bath in the morning or about three or so hours before they go to bed. It is very unwise to let a bird go to sleep all wet.
