Sooty Shearwater

Many birds die on their migration north and south. This happens yearly because they get caught in bad weather and the dead birds wash up on beaches.

The saying, "manawa titi," refers to the powers of flight possessed by the titi and so a man possessed of a good staying power may be described as manawa titi.

The maori have a good business capturing and selling the fat young birds.

An observer sitting on an ocean front beach sees hundreds of Sooty Shearwater bobbing in the surf. Then one bird followed by another and then the whole flock rises from the water and circles their nesting grounds. Some birders describe the rising and circling of the Shearwaters a wonder of the bird world.
