The Chaffinch


the nest that takes from three to 18 days to complete. Older more experienced birds take less time to build the new nest. They prefer to build their nests in the fork tree or bush. The female lay four to five gray eggs tinged with pink and covered in brown blotches. The eggs hatch in about twelve days. The pair of Chaffinch usually have only one brood a year where they produce typically four to six young. The female Chaffinch does most of the feeding of the newly hatched birds.

Most northeastern Chaffinch fly south for the winter months. In Europe the bird winters there, frequently with other finches, and gathers in orchards. The Chaffinch arrives in the United Kingdom in the month of March and leaves around October.

Their voice changes adapting to territory they presently inhabit. The ornithologist, Oliver, has given a description of the chaffinch's song as, "usually heard in New Zealand "as a bar of seven notes and terminal flourish."
