FEED AND BRING THE BIRDS TO YOUR BACK YARD When you stock the favorite bird food at your feeder you make the birds feel at home. When they are comfortable and secure in your back yard you can observe some amazing things from your window. One thing that occurs is the female Cardinal will imitate a young bird by begging for food with an open mouth facing the male Cardinal. This is part of the courtship routine that happens with every pair of Cardinals every year. If you like song birds to nest in your back yard, try adding something extras. One thing song birds enjoy are egg shells. The egg shells supply the birds with the grit they need to keep their food grinding gizzards in good form. Purple Martins, Chickadees and other song birds find egg shell inviting and tempting. One thing you must pay attention to is the seasons. Soon the early spring migration will start so keep your bird feeder full. Most likely you will observe rarely seen birds like the lovely Rose Breasted Grosbeak. You don't often see them in your back yard but in early spring with a full feeder could entice this bird to your back yard. Some people can't stand weeds and dandelions. These people use weed killer that ends up hurting the worms, grubs and birds. If you use weed killer then you aren't a friend to some birds. Even the dreaded dandelion is a gourmet treat for the Indigo Bunting, White Crowned Sparrow and other song birds. Now fill your back yard feeder and have the melody of the birds. LNG with their songs you can observe the antics of cardinals and finches. It is easy when you decide to keep your back yard feeder full of miscellaneous seeds for the different species of birds in your area. After the folks are off to work and there is part of a waffle or a stale onion bagel around why not put this in the feeder. Juncos, Sparrows, Robins in season and Towhees will eat up these morsels quickly. The Red Cardinals will eat up the sunflower seeds, apples and other choice offerings. Nuthatches, Chickadees and Blue Birds will snatch up any peanut butter mix you offer at your feeder. Speaking about Chickadees, The Black Capped Chickadee is the State Bird of Maine and Massachusetts. Chickadees are a bit shy so they will fly into your feeder, snatch a seed and be gone so you must watch carefully. Chickadees don' t seem to mind the winter months.
