Western Grebe

During migration Western Grebes fly in loose flocks but spread out to feed during the day.

This bird spends the winter months on large lakes with bulrushes growing on damp or flooded land along the Pacific Coast from Alaska to California and on Gulf Coast of Louisiana and Texas. Also some birds will spend the northern snow covered months on large river systems in the Western United States on shallow coastal bays and marshland. In the areas where the grebe winter man has spilled oil and used insecticides that they ingest and the poison accumulates in their bodies and their breeding success is decreased.

The call of the Western Grebe sounds like a double "kreeet" mainly on breeding grounds.

Similar species of water birds are: The Loons, Horned and Eared Grebes, Red Necked Grebe and Clark's Grebe. The Western Grebe throughout most of its range has a stable and healthy population.
