At one time the bird was revered by Mayan priests and The Aztecs, and Guatemala displays the bird on its coat-of-arms and flag. This is one truly exotic birds that breeds north in Arizona,

The bird is a short distance migrant. Although their flight is fast they are reluctant to fly any distance.

The male Trogon uses their flashier plumage in courtship. The Trogon returns annually to desert mountain canyons for nesting and breeds in woodlands and after breeding they construct a cavity type nest or gnaw holes in trees to make their nests.

After mating and nest building the female Elegant Trogon lays three to four white or pastel colored eggs. Their diet consists mainly of insects, caterpillars, spiders and land crabs and sometimes berries and other fruit and their weak legs reflect their diet.

Their voice is a loud, raucous, a hollow croak like a pig's grunt and a dog's bark, and once you heard the Trogon's undignified and unforgettable call you will always identify its call.

The bird is difficult to locate as it perches in the trees until it moves. After an hour or two of tramping though the woods you will finally observe the Southwest's most fabulous bird as one of thefew truly exotic birds that breed north of Mexico,

The Elegant Trogon is similar to the rarer Eared Trogon.
