devote as much time and energy as she wanted to further research and work. Her
health continued to decline. She died February 20, 1972.
Among the many honors accorded to this remarkable woman are two awards given
in her name to promising women physicists, the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award from
the American Physical Society, and the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Distinguished
Scholar Program established by the Argonne National Laboratory.
