department of physics. In 1996, he was appointed director of the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology. In 2002, he was named University Professor. He is currently Director of the Carbon Nanotechnology Laboratory.

Smalley is active in the public debate on the future of energy, research, funding, and nanotechnology.
