Cell Biology encouraging students to study science. He plays tennis and collects contemporary American art. He has one son, John Alexander, born in 1958, who is active in music and graphic design.

Berg has written or contributed to several books including Exploring Genetic Mechanisms, University Science Books; (March 1997), Genes and Genomes: A Changing Perspective, University Science Books; (January 1991), and Dealing With Genes: The Language of Heredity, University Science Books; (September 1992).
