Gregor Johann Mendel - Founder of GeneticsThere was little response. An unfortunate suggestion by another botanist led Mendel to begin studying the hawkweed which is now understood to reproduce asexually; the research results were so inconclusive that Mendel had no success in finding any recognizable pattern. Mendel also did research in apiculture, meteorology, and astronomy. He was elected abbot in 1968 and held this position until his death January 6, 1884. The workload of running the monastery meant Mendel has little time to continue his research. In retrospect, Mendel was too far ahead of other botanists at that time. Sixteen years after his death, his work was rediscovered by Carl Correns in Germany, Hugo de Vries in the Netherlands, and Erich von Tschermak-Seysenegg in Austria. A few months before his death, he is quoted as saying:
Mendel died January 6, 1884. He is buried in an Augustinian tomb in Brno. The Mendel Medal is awarded by Villanova University to recognize scientific accomplishment and religious conviction. Honors
