Showtime

You know what comes next, and you know what you would like to see come next. Let me say this: You will only see the former, not the latter, because, as already noted, this movie is self-aware . Far too self-aware, and whatever humor can be found throughout is strained and constipated (for lack of a better term).

And to make matters worse the bad guy (or is that: Bad Guy) is so much a cliche you almost feel obligated to cry out when he appears with a big gun: Look out! He's got a gun! if for no other reason than to quell the mounting moronic mindless mush that is this movie.

A word or two now on the director responsible for "Showtime", Tom Dey, whose previous claim to fame is a movie entitled "Shanghai Noon", also a buddy movie--but one that actually worked in its attempts at humor, parody, and straight guy comedy.

Given Mr. Dey had success with the aforementioned Jackie Chan vehicle it follows--or should follow--he could repeat his success. Wrong. And why is that, exactly? Beyond the self-awareness I suspect it owes much to the fact director Dey, like his actors, tries to hard to make the moviergoer laugh.

Instead he makes them angry and frustrated at the fact they spent money to see this movie.
