8 Mile

Nov 19, 2002 - © James C. Hess

Now that the mid-term elections have come and gone (thankfully, he said, taking a deep breath, a sigh of relief) it comes as no surprise that the liberals, the Liberals, and the Politically Correct types of the Hollywood Machine proper have taken to making snide remarks under their collective breath: How it is, for example, George W. Bush is not the elected president of the United States of America, but the SELECTED president. How it is the elections were not what they could have been, should have been, because, historically, no one (?) votes in said elections, so those votes collected this time around are not really reflective of the mood of The Great Unwashed Masses. How it is people--again--did not understand what they were voting for.

And so on.

No surprise, any of this. Nor does it come as a surprise to hear or read by way of the studio hacks and sycophants otherwise known as 'critics' and 'reviewers' that the reason a film like "8 Mile" will prove to be a commercial and critical success is not because of one Eminem and his abilities and talents but because The Great Unwashed Masses, who vote ignorantly and in an uneducated manner, are, in fact, racists, bigots, sexists, misanthropic and misogynistic sorts who can relate to such works.

Simply, a film or movie like "8 Mile" will succeed because it appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Which, according to the intelligentsia of the Hollywood Machine, is A Bad Thing.

It is A Bad Thing because, so sayeth the aforementioned knowitalls, it goes to show what The Great Unwashed Masses really want by way of mass media and entertainment, and that should not be allowed because as long as The Great Unwashed Masses get what they want then things such as racism, sexism, bigotry, and the likes will exist.

Don't even try to find and follow the logic in this. It is akin to listenting to the losers in the most recent election attempt to explain, quantify, and rationalize why they lost when the truth and fact are immediate.

But I digress. Back to "8 Mile" and why it will prove to be successful: It goes to what made Stephen King the equivalent of a rock star in literary circles and why, despite his shameless narcissistic tendencies--heavy on the obscene and vulgar, Eminem may very well become, in the next few years, a legitimate acting talent on par with such acting luminaries as Marlon Brando and Kirk Douglas: This is what people want in entertainment.
