Mr. Deeds

Jul 2, 2002 - © James C. Hess

And if this nastiness were not enough when Deeds arrives to New York to claim his new life and lifestyle he is almost immediately set upon by a tabloid television show intent to ruin him. An effort, incidentially, orchestrated by one Babe Bennett (Winona Ryder), the producer of this program.

Of course, in her efforts to destroy him she falls for him and--you get the idea of how this particular narrative thread goes.

I noted previously Frank Capra made this movie once upon a time. When he did so it was a quality film. There are reasons for why this is: Capra played the story at hand straight and simple, solid and honest: He told a good story. Those responsible for this remake have chosen, for reasons unknown, not to do so. Consequently, the resulting movie is offensive and rude. I could cite certain examples pertaining to offensive and rude but doing so would possibly offend certain readers and might actually get me in trouble for violating community standards. Instead, let me just say this: Actor John Turturro should be ashamed of himself for not only appearing in this cinematic tripe but for doing what he did, involving Deeds' feet. Let me also say that whatever chemistry there might have been between Deeds and Lopez vaporized in the first fart joke Sandlers insisted on including in the movie.

I wish I could say the same thing for the entire movie--that it simply vaporized on mention of the name 'Adam Sandler'.

Unfortunately, that didn't happen, because we deserve films and movies like this one.
