See Spot Run

Waiting on line to buy a ticket for "See Spot Run" I happened to see a woman--a well-endowed woman--wearing a t-shirt with this on it:

Some days it pays to be stupid.

Apparently. Which goes to explain--albeit indirectly--why "See Spot Run" was made.

Some days it does pay to be stupid.

Just ask those involved in making "See Spot Run", which is undeniably stupid.

But, for what it is worth, that is a good thing. (More on this momentarily.)

Based on the title of this movie one would assume it has something to do with the books that featured said canine--Spot.

One would assume incorrectly: Instead of Dick and Jane there is Gordon, Stephanie, and James. Spot is present, but so are copious amounts of poo. Along with a ganster named Sonny Talia, whose anatomy meets with a misfortune.

Repulsive? Yes. Dumb? Yes. But, strangely enough, funny.

'Funny' as in "Porky's", for whatever that is worth: Stupid. (Just like that t-shirt said.)

Spot is a dog once trained for the FBI's canine corps. But his career as such is interrupted when he--oh, how to put this--bites off one of Talia's jewels. This is unfortunate. So Talia, as mob sorts are inclinced to do (apparently), orders a hit on the dog. The hit is learned of and Spot is placed into a canine version of the witness protection program.

That is, he would be, but he isn't, instead ending up in the possession of a fellow named James (Angus T. Jones) and his neighbor, Gordon (David Arquette), who has a crush on James' mother, Stephanie (Leslie Bibb).

Gordon, y'see, baby-sits James because he wants to get to know Stephanie. But Spot gets in the way.

Constantly.

That, basically, is the premise of this movie. What remains claims to be slapstick comedy. It is, but stupid: Gorden frequently finds himself smeared with dog dung; he has his underwear ripped off as he attempts to climb a gutter pipe--which, predictably, collapses; he gets wet when lawn sprinklers get turned on; he is misunderstood by police who appear on the scene; there the ruination of a pet store; Gordon gets wrapped with bubble wrap (which conveniently is inflated by helium); there are zebra farts ignited--

And so on.

Like I said: Stupid.

I noted previously "See Spot Run" is funny like "Porky's". It is. If you like funny like that.

There is one redeeming element to "See Spot Run" despite your opinion of it otherwise: Michael Clarke Duncan, who made such an impression on all movie-goers in "The Green Mile": He plays his role with professionalism unmatched by anyone else in this movie.
