Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and--

Let me ask you: Did you have your beginnings in grifting, doing the three-card monty on a street corner in mid-town Manhattan? Do you work in Hollywood, promoting, marketing, exploiting, shamelessly hyping really, really bad films and movies with names like "The Blair Witch Project"? When "The Blair Witch Project" first came out it became a pop culture phenom that sucked more than a few in with snake-oil salesman banter that hasn't been seen for many years, and was, because of this, perversely refreshing.

If you were somebody, if you wanted be somebody, if you wanted be seen with somebody in the hope you would be somebody, you went to see "The Blair Witch Project".

Only to discover, there in the darkness, watching the flickering shadows and light, you were not somebody. Just a fool, who had been had.

Such outrage, such indignation. Such anger by those who were taken in by "The Blair Witch Project".

But despite this, here we go again. Nothing surprising in this. Hollywood lives for the sequel. Especially the sequel that will make money. What is surprising is the willingness, the eagerness, the desire of those fooled, who want to see the sequel to "The Blair Witch Project", "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2".

Which is not as bad as "The Blair Witch Project".

It is worse.

Much worse.

To say "Book of Shadows" is bad is quite possibly the understatement of the year. It is worse than bad.

But there is good to this movie: Its existence goes to demonstrate how truly bad "The Blair Witch Project" really was.

And how it is possible to make a sequel even worse than the original.

"Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" is a certain mess. Had it been done by a USCinema undergraduate that student would not only be failed but banned from the film school.

It is mindless. It is muddled. It is. . . I can't find words suitable (and acceptable in mixed company) to describe how moronic, dumb, stupid, idiotic, brainless, purile, asinine, and explicitly bad it really, truly is.

"Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" was directed by Joe Berlinger, who previously made documentary films. Odds are, in the wake of this movie, he may never be allowed again to do so, given how much damage he has done to the credibility of the documentary film and the documentary filmmaker.
