Every summer it is the same: First comes the SERIOUS films with names like "The Patriot", filled with high drama and wrought with melodramatics.
Then comes the silly, stupid, mindless stuff with names like "Scary Movie". Collectively a perfect balance for the moviegoer who wants it all. "Scary Movie" is silly. Stupid. Mindless. And a welcomed relief from all the films and movies that want money and awards. (And, if you ask me, much better than some of the serious stuff presently available at your local concrete bunker that pretends to be a multiplex.) "Scary Movie" comes from the Zucker Bros. genre. That is, the spoof flick: "Airplane!", "The Naked Gun", and "Hot Shots". It is satire. It is a deliberate attack on slasher movies, teeney bopper horror movies, and high-tech action efforts like "The Matrix". Because it is it will make you laugh, cry, snort, and lose control of yourself. Now. About the plot of "Scary Movie". There isn't one. But it doesn't matter. Plot in a movie like "Scary Movie" is not needed. If it did exist it would only serve to ruin an otherwise fun time made up of a variety of gags. Consider the one about the movie's token virgin who has a certificate to prove so. Gutter humor, yes. But if you go to "Scary Movie" expecting something more than gutter humor don't bother going. "Scary Movie", as the title suggests, is about horror and slasher movies. Except that it isn't. It is a deliberate poke in the eye of horror and slasher movies. Specifically, the eye of Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter of "Scream", the co-creator of the self-aware slasher movie subgenre. And it is clever when it comes to this, because it is also about other things: The Wayans, who are many, in front of and behind the camera, for one. Homophobic and xenophobic jokes for another. African-American and loud black man stereotypes for another. (I forget where it was I saw it, but I will never forget the time I heard Keenen Ivory Wayans, the director of "Scary Movie" scream 'I'm not a Afro-American. I'm a nigger, and don't you forget it!') The director of "Scary Movie" is Keenen Ivory Wayans. The screenplay (and I use that term loosely here) is credited to Shawn Wayans, Marlon Wayans, Buddy Johnson, Phil Beauman, Jason Friedberg, Aaron Seltzer. I mention all this, because these facts go to explain a lot about this movie. Had anyone else attempted "Scary Movie" it would have been shelved, never to be screened. Because it is the Wayans, much is allowed. And because much is allowed much fun is to be had. Go To Page: 1 2
