Something's Gotta Give - Page 2© James C. Hess Consider the line Nicholson, as Harry Sanborn, utters: Some say I'm an expert on the younger woman. I've been dating them for 40 years.
It probably doesn't matter who Jack is or isn't in such films and movies. What matters is what he does in a given role that attracts one's attention, gently pulling them into the make-believe world by way of very loose and friendly eyebrows and a sly smile that could make a Cheshire cat jealous, convincing them finally that this particular flick is worth the price of admission and time spent between the shadows and the light. It is something only Jack does. And, lordy, does he do it well. In "Something's Gotta Give" Jack Nicholson, as noted, plays a character Harry Sanborn, a rich music executive who is currently dating (is that the right word for what Nicholson does on and off the screen?) the younger Marin Barry (Amanda Peet). She takes him for the weekend to her mother's home in the Hamptons. Everything goes reasonably well until Jack, er, Harry is caught raiding the contents of the refrigerator in the night by Marin's mother, Erica (Diane Keaton) and Aunt Zoe (Frances McDormand). Horrors? Logically it would seem so, but this is Nicholson and his one-time, real-life love interest Keaton, and, well, there goes logic and reason. Erica is a famous playwright, who has seen enough of the world not to question her daughter's interest in older men. Now here's the thing; Is Marin really interested in Harry, given she has yet to have sex with him? Furthermore, why did she really bring him home to meet Mom? There are basically two ways to find out the answer to this question, and I won't tell, so that means you must go see this movie. I will say this: Harry seems to have a heart attack, and is rushed to the hospital, where he meets a doctor who is, well, this is the Hamptons, so you can believe the doctor is handsome and young and named Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves). Julian is immediately taken by Erica, an older woman. Julian assumes Harry is with Erica, so he decides the best way to get Erica for himself is to relegate Harry to bed. But not Erica's bed. Does Julian get Erica? Does Harry get Erica? And what of his young fling? Details. Details, details, details. What matters finally is what takes place in between the bedroom moments.
